I am trying to teach myself to oil paint even though I have had some lessons a few years ago. The most difficult part has been laying down a stroke and leaving it alone. I am one of those that mush and brush until everything is blended and/or muddy. For this study, I am using a photo of my niece. Time will tell how close a resemblance I achieve.

It's all about the fun of trying.
Besides, you have made a great start here, sure to be a success.
This is a great start. I just ordered some oils and thought I'd try them again, too. I'll be following your progress.
Ann good for you going for a portrait in oil. Something I've never tried. So far I think you have a good base going. Can't wait to see what comes.
I have found the hardest thing about oils is letting it set still; the blending ability is fantastic for shadows and blending colors but as you say it is easy to go to far; I do like adding a light layer at a time of almost water color wash consistency, letting it dry, adding another layer and so on – perfect for defining shadows and color on faces; the rosy cheeks and pink lips, and the slight shadows. I love the apples in the post under this one as well!
